Dear sisters and brothers,
As we celebrate Mary, Mother of the Church Parish’s 40th Anniversary (1977-2017), it is my honour to present to you this Booklet that marks a significant milestone of Macquarie Fields Parish.
As we learned in the Scriptures, forty is a very significant number for preparing one’s heart and mind for something special. Moses went up the mountain for forty days, to seek God’s face in prayer and fasting. The people of Israel were wandering in the wilderness for forty years in preparation for their entry into the Promised Land. The Prophet Elijah fasted for forty days as he journeyed in the wilderness to Horeb, the mountain of God. Our Lord Jesus spent forty days and nights in the wilderness in preparation for his mission. Every year, the Church has forty days of Lent as a special time in which to reconnect with God and prepare for the celebration of Easter.
Therefore, 40 years is a great milestone for us as a parish to celebrate the many good things that have happened in the lives of our parishioners, past and present. We take this wonderful opportunity to give thanks to God for the many great things he has bestowed on our parish, through the intercession of Mother Mary. The celebrations of our 40th Anniversary this year help us look back to the past with gratitude and look expectantly forward to the future with hearts full of hope.
As a vibrant multicultural parish, we do our best to encourage each other to use the various gifts that God has given to us for building up our faith community in Macquarie Fields, so that our parish can fulfil our mission: “to be a light unto the world.” Though the mission may never be totally fulfilled, it is the goal we move toward continually. It is also the goal for the entire parish as we undertake to renew our commitment to love and serve God wholeheartedly.
May Mary, Mother of the Church, intercede for us in everything we do, to renew and be renewed in our lives and our parish now, and in the years to come. May we follow her steps to always say ‘yes’ to the call to serve God and our neighbours with loving and joyful hearts for the glory of God’s name and the salvation of all.
Yours sincerely in Christ,
Fr Linh Nguyen SVD PP
