Our parish, our mission, our community
Mary Mother of the Church is the spiritual home of Catholics in Macquarie Fields and south-west Sydney — a registered charity devoted to worship, formation and practical care for our neighbours since 1976.
Who We Are
A multicultural community gathered around the Eucharist
Our parish was established on 31 December 1976, and for nearly five decades our church on Edgar Street has been a place where generations of local families have gathered for Mass, celebrated the sacraments, and supported one another through the ordinary joys and sorrows of life.
We are a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Wollongong, and our priests belong to the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) — the Divine Word Missionaries — an international missionary congregation whose charism is to proclaim the Gospel across cultures. It is a fitting match: our parish family includes people from dozens of cultural backgrounds, including migrants, refugees and asylum seekers who have made Macquarie Fields home, alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parishioners and families who have lived here for generations.
Our patroness, Mary, Mother of the Church, reminds us that the Church is above all a family. That is what we strive to be: one family of faith, in all our diversity, united at the Lord's table.
“How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity.” Psalm 133:1
Our Charitable Purpose
What we exist to do
As a registered charity, our purpose is the advancement of religion and the relief of need in our community. In practice, that means:
-
Providing a place of worship
Maintaining our church as a sacred space where the community gathers for Mass — every day of the week — as well as prayer, devotions and the celebration of the sacraments throughout the year.
-
Teaching and faith formation
Preparing children and adults for Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation and Marriage; supporting parents as the first teachers of faith; and offering ongoing formation for parishioners of every age.
-
Pastoral care
Accompanying people through illness, bereavement, loneliness and crisis — in their homes, in hospital and in aged care — with visits, prayer, the sacraments and a listening presence.
-
Social welfare and outreach
Offering practical help and friendship to families, seniors, youth, migrants, refugees and people experiencing financial hardship, and connecting them with local welfare and community services when more support is needed.
